Most health problems start with the same question: what should I do about this? Finding the answer is often harder than the care itself. In this post I explain why the front door to healthcare is so hard to find, and what a doctor-reviewed first step changes.
Three questions before a single answer
When a symptom appears, a person has to settle three things before anyone has even heard about their situation.
- Where to go? The health centre, occupational healthcare, a private clinic, the emergency department or the pharmacy? Each has its own route and its own conditions.
- Whom to call? The call-back system, the booking line, the occupational health chat or the insurer's service? Often the right number only becomes clear after the wrong one has been called.
- Is this serious enough? Many people put off getting in touch because they don't want to be a bother, while others go to the emergency department with something that could have been handled differently.
All three questions should be answered by someone trained to assess the situation. Today they are too often left to the patient.
The same story, told many times
Once the route is finally found, the repeating begins. Symptoms are described on the phone, then on a form and finally in the consulting room. Each step is necessary for the professional handling it, but to the patient it looks as if nobody has been listening.
Time passes before the patient reaches the right next step. That time is not care. It is waiting, moving between places and explaining.
What a doctor-reviewed first step changes
We think the front door should work the other way round. First you tell your story once, in your own words. Then a professional decides what the right next step is, and you go straight there.
In Treat it works like this:
- You describe your concern in the chat. The chat is always open.
- AI asks structured follow-up questions. It does not diagnose or assess urgency; it prepares a clear summary for the doctor.
- A licensed doctor reads the summary and reviews your case during service hours, every day from 08:00 to 20:00.
- The doctor either resolves the matter directly, for example by giving advice, writing a prescription or a sick leave certificate, or directs you to the right follow-up care through the healthcare you already have.
The essential thing is that the story doesn't need to be told again. With your consent, the doctor can look at your Kanta records, Finland's national health data archive, and the doctor's notes appear in Omakanta, the portal where you can see your own records. Prescriptions go to the national Prescription Centre, so any pharmacy can dispense them.
What that means in practice
We have measured what a clear first step does. The figures are from the end of August 2026, and response time was measured during service hours.
- The average wait for a doctor has been 2 minutes 14 seconds.
- 62% of cases have needed no further appointment.
- 100% of clinical decisions have been made by licensed doctors.
- Doctors have handled over 108,000 chat visits on the Treat platform.
The figures don't mean every case is resolved in the chat. They mean that when it isn't, you quickly know where to go, and you go there with a doctor's assessment in hand.
The front door is not the whole house
Treat does not replace the health centre, occupational healthcare or specialist care. It is a first step that directs you to them when they are needed and resolves the matter when they are not. That is why Treat works with the healthcare you already have, whether it is public, private, employer-provided or covered by insurance.
In an emergency, call 112
Treat is not an emergency service. If you or someone near you has sudden chest pain, difficulty breathing, a serious injury, impaired consciousness or any other life-threatening condition, call 112 immediately or go to the emergency department. If there is sudden one-sided weakness, difficulty speaking or any other sign of a stroke, call 112 immediately, even if the symptom passes.
For everything else, Treat's doctors can assess your situation in the chat during service hours and tell you what the right next step is for you.
